Retreats and Immersion

Sunrise practice, nourishing meals, open-air shalas, and time to slow down in Goa. Retreats offer space to rest, reset, and reconnect, while asana immersions provide a more structured path for those looking to deepen their practice through consistent, guided study in a focused and supportive setting.

How These Experiences Differ

Retreats and immersions are held within the same setting, but they are designed with different intentions. A retreat allows for flexibility, where practice is available but never required, and the day can be shaped around rest, exploration, or simply time away from routine. An asana immersion, on the other hand, follows a more defined structure, where practice is central and the schedule is built to support steady development over time.

Choosing between the two is less about level and more about what you are looking for at this point. Whether you need space to step back or are ready to engage more consistently with your practice, each offers a distinct way of working with yoga.

Yoga Retreat - Goa

Rest, Presence, and a Gentle Return to Self

The yoga retreat is designed as a space to slow down, reset, and reconnect with practice without pressure or expectation. Each day includes optional yoga, meditation, and pranayama, with sessions that range from gentle and restorative to more dynamic classes. Participation is always your choice, allowing you to engage as much or as little as feels right.

Outside of practice, the day remains open. Many spend time by the pool, visit nearby beaches and local markets, or simply rest within the quiet of the centre. This balance of guided sessions and unstructured time allows the body and mind to settle naturally, without needing to follow a fixed pace or outcome.

Asana Immersion - Goa

Stability, Strength, and Clarity in Physical Practice

The asana immersion is a structured programme created for those who want to work more deeply with their physical practice. The days are built around twice-daily asana sessions, supported by focused workshops on alignment, adjustments, and technique. Rather than introducing constant variation, the approach allows you to return to key postures and patterns, developing clarity through repetition and direct experience.

This consistency creates a steady progression over the course of the immersion. Strength, stability, and understanding develop gradually, supported by guidance from experienced teachers. The programme requires regular participation and is best suited to practitioners and teachers who are ready to commit to a more focused and disciplined environment.

What You’ll Be Working With

Across both experiences, the same teaching approach underpins the work, but the way you engage with it differs. On retreat, practice supports rest and is offered as a resource rather than a requirement, allowing space for personal rhythm and recovery. In immersion, practice becomes the centre of the day, with each session building on the last to support depth, consistency, and embodied understanding.

This distinction shapes not only the schedule, but the overall experience of being here.

Choosing What Fits

If you are unsure which option is right for you, the distinction is straightforward. A retreat is suited to those looking for rest, flexibility, and time away from routine, while an asana immersion is designed for those who want structure, consistency, and a deeper engagement with their practice.

Both are valuable in different ways, and choosing the one that aligns with your current needs will shape the experience meaningfully.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be experienced in yoga to join a retreat?
Not at all. Many guests join retreats simply to rest, reconnect with their bodies, or experience yoga in a supportive environment. Classes are offered at different intensities, and participation is always optional. You are welcome to practise as much or as little as feels right for you.
Are the yoga and meditation classes mandatory?
No. Classes are offered daily, but they are entirely optional. Some participants join every session, while others attend selectively and spend more time resting, reading, or exploring the surroundings. The retreat is designed to allow you to move at your own pace.
What kind of yoga classes are offered?
Classes typically include a blend of dynamic and restorative practices. Some sessions are more energising and movement-based, while others focus on slower, restorative work, breath practices, or meditation. This balance allows participants to listen to their bodies and choose what feels supportive each day.
What does a typical day look like on a retreat?
A typical day may begin with optional morning yoga or meditation, followed by breakfast. Later in the day there may be another practice session or workshop, along with free time to rest, visit the beach, explore local markets, or relax by the pool. Evenings are usually quieter, allowing time to unwind and reflect.
Can I attend if I am travelling alone?
Yes. Many participants attend retreats on their own, and it is very common to meet others who are also travelling solo. The environment is welcoming and relaxed, making it easy to connect with others while still having personal space.
Are meals included during the retreat?
Yes. Retreat programmes in Goa include twice daily nourishing and satisfying vegetarian meals designed to support yoga practice. Meals are prepared fresh and shared together, creating relaxed moments of connection throughout the day.
What can I do outside of the yoga sessions?
Participants often spend their free time visiting nearby beaches, exploring local markets, relaxing by the pool, receiving Ayurveda massages available in the local towns. The schedule intentionally includes open time so that you can enjoy the natural beauty and slower pace of the region and savour a taste of local culture .
Is it safe to travel to Goa if I have never visited India before?
Yes. Goa is one of the most accessible and welcoming regions in India for international travellers. Many retreat goers visit India for the first time. Our team provides consistent contact for prearrival and arrival preparations. Once you arrive, you will feel at home in the retreat environment which is inclusive, supportive and well organised.
What should I bring with me?
Once your place is confirmed, you will receive a preparation guide outlining recommended clothing, yoga essentials, and practical items for your stay. Comfortable clothing suitable for yoga, light layers, and personal essentials are generally all that is needed. Keep plenty of empty space in your suitcase for shopping!
How do I know which programme is right for me?
If you are seeking rest, renewal, time to be, time to enjoy local attractions, as well as your daily yoga practice, the yoga holiday retreat would be a good choice. If you are looking for deeper depth teaching or practice, an immersion would be a good choice. It is possible to also have a blend of both during the times that we have two programs running during the same dates , with different schedules. The Himalaya Yoga Valley team is always happy to guide you toward the option that best suits you.
